CES 2010 

The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show wrapped on a positive note in early January in in Las Vegas. The focus was on looking forward to new technology and products, instead of looking back at difficult times. The show was busy and crowded, with around 120,000 attendees and some 2,500 exhibitors. -- www.cesweb.org

The big focus of CES was on 3D TV, but from TVs to smartphones the big push was on connectivity and internet access:

• Connectivity / Web anywhere
• Connected / Internet TVs - Movies on demand to Skype video conferencing)
• Content portability - Buy once, play anywhere, with industry efforts including DECE
• Mass shared storage for consumers - Cloud vs. NAS network-attached drive in the home.
• Tablets and E-book Reader devices - Screens between 4" and 10"
• Smartphones and Google Android phones
• Widgets to full-fledged Apps for phones to HD TVs

 3D TV

• Big push at CES 2010 - LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba
• CEA projects 3D TV will be over a quarter of TV sets sold by 2013
  • 3D popular: Over 27% of U.S. adults saw 3D movie or event in 2009
• 3D TV products in 2010 - 3D TV (with glasses), "3D ready"
• Content will be driven by Blu-ray and cable boxes, not broadcast (yet)
• Requires glasses - Focused, not casual viewing
• Event-driven, but not 10's of glasses for large party

Smartphones - Distinct Market Segments

Smartphones are no longer primarily defined as phones -- neither the Apple iPhone nor the Verizon Droid (Android) phone have dedicated phone keys; Instead you place calls from your contacts list and answer on the touchscreen display.

They provide phone plus Internet, connectivity and storage, text and multimedia, multi-tasking

• Phone - But not dedicated phone keys - Calls from contacts list, answer on touchscreen
• Communications - text messaging, instant messaging, email, visual voice mail.
• Internet access - Wi-Fi browsing and downloads, GPS location-based maps and services
• Media player - And recorder with camera and microphone, streaming media

Smartphone Market

Smartphones have outperformed mobile phones -- global smartphone shipments grew 4 percent over the 2009, to 41.4 million units in Q3 (Canalys).

• Nokia / Symbian - 46% (was 47%)
• RIM BlackBerry - 21% (was 15%)
• Apple iPhone -18% (was 17%)

Verizon Wireless / Novatel MiFi - Wi-Fi Router over Cellular Broadband

Windows Phone 7 Series

Then in February 2010 Microsoft announced Windows Phone 7, a significant change. It combines a Zune-like smooth-flowing user interface, the Zune music and video experience, and Xbox LIVE games and service. But the biggest news is Microsoft's push to move beyond individual apps, to make your phone the "hub" of data and information, especially updated from online sites.

Handheld Wireless - Screens from 3" to 10"

While smartphones aim to do be the complete convergence device, there is also still a place for wireless handheld devices that are focused on specific uses, including media players, game systems, and E-Book readers. As dedicated devices, these can be designed to better meet the primary use, for example with widescreen displays, game control pads, or E-Ink displays.

Yet these dedicated devices also do more, so you can play at least some media and games on almost any portable device. And many handheld devices also are adding Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, to access online content and services, or even to provide general web browsing.
